Opening of the bells
The ringers clubbed together to pay the coach fare of the conductor rang for service at St Mary's on Sunday Morning, and set off at once to walk to Chesterfield
[Ed-around 28miles. This was part of a series of peals rung that weekend see Felstead.
From Bill Butler's "One this day" The ringing for the opening of Chesterfield bells continued with 5003 Grandsire Caters by the Ashton-under-Lyne Society; 5346 Grandsire Caters by the Sherwood Youths from Nottingham and 5003 Grandsire Caters by the Mottram Society. The report notes: "This concluded the whole; each party having completed their peal at the first attempt, which is an achievement never before performed in the annals of Change Ringing." ]
